CHARITABLE LIVING Group Reinvents the Spirit of RIFSoCal’€™s Historic “BOOKS IN THE PARK!”

It’s 1970 in Santa Fe Springs Park.  Imagine children running off to have fun - and finding Mother Goose playing her harp on the lawn!  Then imagine the children’€™s delight when Mother Goose gathered them into a circle, read them a story and encouraged them to choose a wonderful new book to keep as their very own. “€œBooks in the Park” was the creation of Santa Fe Springs Librarian, Ruth Grams -€“ alias Mother Goose - one of RIFSoCal’s founders.{image_5}

It’s 2011 in North Weddington Park in North Hollywood.  Again imagine children running off to have fun -€“ and finding a clown, a balloon artist/twister creating swords, jet packs and almost anything else a child could dream up, a face painter, music, kids doing the limbo, story time, and a bookmark creation zone.

All to raise awareness and funds for Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California!  {image_3}

Books in the Park’s joyful tradition remained as vibrant and colorful as its 1970 inception thanks to Charitable Living’s belief in the magic of bringing books and children together.{image_1}

What a beautiful way to spend an afternoon - listening to the sound of children giggling as they delighted in the park’s wonderful surprises!

“The gift of this experience has MADE MY VALENTINES DAY,”€ said Elle Febbo following a reading of her new book, “What Love Is A - Z,” at Watts Learning Center.  Forty focused, attentive children shared their own excitement about futures as readers and writers, believing it was possible after hearing Elle’€™s personal writing journey. “I’ve found that there’s a sisterhood amongst the women of the world who dedicate their lives to the betterment of children, and that just to be around these like-hearted souls is a gift to the children, to ourselves, and to one another,”€ said Elle.  Each child received a personally autographed copy of Elle’s book and a special Valentine’s Day book from RIFSoCal.  It was truly a joyous morning!  {image_1} {image_2}

Let’s Read! Let’s Move!

{image_1}  “Let’s Read. Let’s Move”, a summer reading initiative sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education was launched on June 29 with book readings, various art and writing activities, and games.  Children in pre-kindergarten through third-grade from area schools, Head Start, and Judy Center programs received free new books and a lunch tote of healthy snacks.  The Department launched this new series to combat summer reading loss and physical inactivity that commonly occur during the lengthy school break.  Over six sessions—held weekly between June 29 and August 3—the Secretary, Cabinet members, Administration officials, and other public figures will be invited to read books, promote healthy lifestyles, and participate in fitness activities with children.  “Let’s Read. Let’s Move.” is in response to the President’s national volunteer campaign, “United We Serve,” which challenges all Americans to engage in meaningful service activities in their communities this summer.  “Let’s Read. Let’s Move.” also spotlights the tenets of the First Lady’s “Let’s Move!” national campaign to combat childhood obesity.  FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE GO TO http://www.ed.gov/blog/2010/06/secretary-arne-duncan-kicks-off-lets-read-lets-move/

{image_1} To launch the fifth year of the Book A Brighter Future campaign, 20 children from St. Aloysius Education Clinic (a SHARE program!) listened to Susan Sarandon read Wild About Books at Books of Wonder, New York’s largest independent bookstore devoted solely to children’s literature.  Children participated in a multicultural book distribution facilitated by Susan, ate cupcakes, played animal bingo, and left with a backpack stuffed with books and other goodies.  A special thank you to SHARE coordinator Beth Pettit for helping to organize this (Academy) award-winning event!
