The Power of One Book

A parent called RIFSoCal yesterday with an inspiring story. She said her son had received a free book at his school, Marvin Elementary. The only contact information on the book was our sticker. She was calling to say it was the first book her son had ever shown any interest in, and was asking how could she get more. It was a book on the Civil War from Magic Treehouse Collection. The power of one book…

The Stars!

”Dear RIF People, Thank you for the new book. My book’s name is The Stars. It is about stars. I liked the book because it has a bear and 3 birds in the sky. But my favorite part of the book is when there are yellow, blue, and red stars. I didn’t know that.  Your Friend, Vanessa”

Ruby Bridges

“I really appreciate the book, Ruby Bridges. I like how Ruby Bridges was a brave little girl. I like Ruby Bridges because she stood up to the people. I also like her because she changed how black kids were treated in schools that didn’t want them there. Love, Shanell”

Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs

“Thank you for the book that you gave me. The title of my book is Dinosaurs from the Magic Tree House. It is special to me because I am studying about fossils. That is a big help for me. Dinosaur fossils are found in different places around the world. Scientists are clever people who study things carefully. Paleontologists dig for the fossils. Scientists build the fossils [in the museum]. Some tools that scientists use are shovels, rakes, picks, and brooms. Best Wishes, Ivana”

Thesaurus

“The book I got was a Webster’s Thesaurus. This Thesaurus is for students. It is a new edition. This Thesaurus has over 85,000 words. It is Alphabetically arranged. One of the words is ‘conspectus’. Conspectus means abridgment, like a summary. Thank you again for giving me this book. Sincerely, Sal

Stormbreaker

Stormbreaker is about a 14 year old kid named Alex Rider. His uncle fooled everyone that he was working for a bank, but he was really a spy and he got ambushed and died. Alex hid in a photo booth from the people who tried to kill him. When he sat down, he warped to a top secret organization. They made Alex a spy like his uncle used to be. He had a lot of gadgets. The mission he was assigned was to find out why a billionaire donated stormbreakers to school. A stormbreaker is supposed to make every computer break down with a hacking system. So, Alex stopped him and saved the computers. I liked the book a lot. People who helped get these books must’ve worked hard. I appreciate it. RIF is the best. Sincerely, Douglas.”
